The official guide to Burning Man, the annual alternative arts & cultural festival held in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert in late August/early September. What started as a whimsical neo-pagan ritual on San Francisco’s Baker Beach in 1986 (think “Wicker Man” without the human sacrifice) grew exponentially into a week-long alternative arts festival in the remote Black Rock Desert of northwestern Nevada that attracts 70,000 visitors who transform the bone-dry salt flats (“The Playa”) of Black Rock into a temporary city in the middle of the American West. It attracts people from around the world, but attendance has become something of a rite of passage for California’s creative class.
