A January 12, 1919, US 167th
Infantry Rainbow Division, Sinzig, Rhine, Germany, 8 page Soldiers letter.
The US soldiers letter has Great content about being stationed in Germany. Please see some content below.
The soldier states that paper to write letters was very scarce and when paper became available it disappeared very quickly that is why it took time to write home. In the letter the soldier talks about how friendly the French, Belgium and Luxemburg civilians were
“Simply Crazy with Delight”
to see the US soldiers as they advanced toward Germany. The letter states in part:
“We hit German soil there was no welcome band playing to receive us. The German people just minded their own business but quickly seeing the way we treated them they were not slow in meeting us half way since then the Germans have treated us royally to my notion far better than the French did.
I have an idea American and Germans will become close friends”
The soldier also mentions in the letter that there are few German young men and the
German women work really hard
harvesting in the fields, etc.
The 8 page letter is 5 ¾ x 9 1/8 inches in size. The letter has normal mailing folds. The letter has some small tears and wrinkles to some lower corners.
