    Description

This is the creme de la creme of my rare coffee mug collection acquired over nearly 30 years of cross-country travel to some of America's quirkiest roadside attractions. It's from a former "tourist" site outside Las Vagas known as the "Nevada Test Site" which is located on a restricted military base where the government conducted lots of above ground nuclear bomb testing in the 50's and 60's. Ever see those famous file films of houses and little villages getting blown away by an atomic blast?  Yup, those tests were conducted at the Nevada Test Site where the government would build little towns and buildings and then blow them away to see what would happen in the event of a real nuclear war. Prior to 9/11/01, the government used to gives tours of the Nevada Test Site only 1 day a month. You had to enter a lottery to be picked for the tour and then go through a background check because the NTS is located on an active military base that is not open to the public. I assume after 9/11 they closed the NTS to tourists (as the government also did with tours of NORAD at Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado Springs).
This mug is in mint, deadstock condition dated 1999 (as per the artwork) since I don't drink coffee but instead collected scores of mugs over 30 years from weird and quirky roadside attractions. What makes this one especially odd is that on the opposite side of the NTS logo showing an atomic blast is a cute photo of some coyote pups!  The juxtaposition of those two images - atomic Armageddon and baby coyotes - is truly strange. What, exactly, were they thinking when they designed this?
I picked this coffee mug up at a tiny giftshop they had on the site - I don't recall much for sale except for some books related to the history of atomic testing at NTS. Go ahead and try to find another one of these. The price reflects the rarity and weirdness of this item.
Check my other auctions for more unusual, vintage mint coffee mugs from my collection that I've started to downsize - I will combine shipping if you buy multiple items to reduce costs to you.
Item will be well packed and sent via priority mail at cost.
Unfortunately I do not accept returns unless the item does not comply with the description in which case I'm happy to take it back. I'm trying to get rid of stuff, not hold into it.
